Kurt Busch’s impressive streak of finishing on the lead lap in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series came to an abrupt end at 22 in Sunday’s postponed Bass Pro Shops NRA Race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Busch, driver of the No. 41 Monster Energy / Haas Automation Chevrolet got loose on the backstretch and spun out of control entering turn three spawning a crash that eliminated Busch, Matt Kenseth, Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski and Paul Menard among others on lap 373.

The Las Vegas, Nevada native later took responsibility for the incident noting he was pushing too hard to win.

“I think I just missed the bottom groove by a few inches, got loose and the wreck was on,” Busch said. “The way that our car was restarting it felt comfortable, it felt good.  That inside with the rosin and the VHT if you don’t hit it exactly right you lose a lot of time.

“I tried to make up for it and got loose.  I feel really bad for the Monster Energy guys.  We had a win in our sights and I just drove the car at 101 percent instead of that 99.”

With the incident, Busch’s streak of races with all laps completed will be reset heading to Michigan International Speedway next weekend. The 37-year-old, however did eclipse the previous record of 20 races set by Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2012.

“I hate it for my guys,” Busch said on the Performance Racing Network. “We’ve completed every lap this year. I put it up on edge to try to win the Bristol Night (Day) Race and overstepped the line.”
