The 2019 season has brought its ups and downs for the No. 22 AM Racing team with Texas native Austin Wayne Self behind the wheel. And although they’ve had a few bad days, this past Saturday in the Corrigan Oil 200 at Michigan International Speedway was definitely an up day for Self and his team.

After qualifying in the 23rd starting position, Self kept his focus, running all 105 laps of the race and finishing in fifth-place. He now sits 13th in the series point standings with the AM Racing owners points position at 15th. The season, on the whole, is his best since starting full-time in the series in 2016.

“Really happy with our performance at Michigan,” says Self after the race. “I can’t thank the AM Racing guys enough along with the continued support from GO TEXAN and AM Technical Solutions.”

Getting to a top-five finish came with some adversity for Self after overcoming two penalties at the beginning of the race. On the fourth lap, Self jumped the restart and had to carry out a pass-through penalty. Then, during a caution on lap 23, Self was caught passing on the left on pit road causing him to start at the tail end of the field on the next restart. Although the penalties were set-backs for the day, Self had confidence in his truck and his team.

“Overcoming two penalties at the beginning of the race – I had a really good truck that I could drive through the field and get us our best finish of the season,’ says Self about his No. 22 AM Racing team and truck.

Self now carries some momentum into the first race of the Truck Series playoffs at Bristol Motor Speedway on Thursday night. The best points position he can gain this season is a ninth-place, which is certainly within reach and would top-off his best season so far.

“I’m really happy with a top-five and excited to go to Bristol and see what we can accomplish,”  says Self.

This week is a quick turn around for the Truck Series with their next race this Thursday, August 15th at 8:30 pm ET at Bristol Motor Speedway. Fans can watch the start of the Gander Outdoors Truck Series playoffs on FOX Sports 1
