Mayer Sweeps ARCA Doubleheader

Mayer sweeps ARCA doubleheader in the ARCA Menards Series Menards.com 200 on Friday and the rain-delayed Menards 200 on Sunday at Toledo Speedway.

Two races in three days give Sam Mayer with GMS Racing a sweep in the ARCA Menards Series doubleheader at Toledo Speedway this weekend. On Friday, Mayer earned his first victory in the series, along with getting his first win in the ARCA Sioux Chief Showdown. Both came in the same race, the Menards.com 200. Although he had to wait an extra day for the rain-delayed Menards 200 on Sunday, Mayer made the sweep look easy with another victory.

Sam Mayer is just 17-years-old from Franklin, Wisconsin, and gave a dominating performance in the Menards.com 200 on Friday by leading the last 97 laps and crossing the finish line 1.607 seconds ahead of Ty Gibbs.who most recently won at Iowa.

“I’ve been waiting over a year for this!” said Mayer after earning his first ARCA win at Toledo Speedway on Friday.

Many accomplishments are already on Mayer’s resume including, winning the ARCA East championship last year. Throughout 2019, Mayer became the youngest national, regional touring series, or international champion in NASCAR history. And he didn’t slow down this year with wins in both the ARCA East and West season openers.

In 15 previous ARCA Menards series starts Mayer made it to the podium eight times with three runner-up finishes. His sweep this weekend now makes him a winner across all the ARCA series.

Mayer completed his sweep by taking the lead on a late restart just past the halfway mark in the Menards 200. The race was called because of rain on lap 127, giving Mayer his second victory of the weekend, along with his second Sioux Chief Showdown win.

“I’m liking this place a lot more than last year.” said Mayer after getting his second victory of the weekend at Toledo Speedway.

The pole-sitter Ty Gibb paced the field for the first 100 laps with Mayer starting in third place. Chandler Smith, the Sioux Chief Showdown points leader, led briefly after starting in second-place.

After a brief caution for rain on lap 103, the cars stayed on track to keep the track dry and went back to green on lap 117. On the restart, Mayer took his No. 21 Chevy to the lead. Three laps later, Gibbs spun in the fourth turn, trying to take the lead but brought out the caution instead. The rain came shortly later, forcing officials to end the race.

In his last six ARCA Menards Series starts, Mayer now has two wins, two seconds, a third and a fourth. Across the ARCA Menards, East, and West, he has eight wins since the start of last season.

This race is the tenth for the ARCA Menards Series and the fifth round of the Sioux Chief Showdown.

The ARCA Menards Series now heads to Michigan Speedway for the VizCom 200 on Sunday, August 9th. The next Sioux Chief Showdown race is on Friday, August 14th, at Daytona’s road course.
