The journey to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series has been one of success for Rubén Garcia Jr. At age 20, the Mexico City native won four races in the NASCAR Mexico Series on the way to earning his first NASCAR championship, making him the youngest driver to ever win the series championship as of 2015.
“To be a champion, you first have to believe you can,” said Garcia, who finished fourth in 2013 and second in 2014. “I started the season with that on my mind. I knew my team was really strong and had the ability to fight for the championship.”
“When I finished the race and I raised the championship trophy, I really did not believe what was happening,” Garcia said. “At the Mexico Series ceremony (earlier that week), when I saw the trophy for the first time with my name on it – that was a big emotional moment for me. And it was the first time I really believed what was happening.”
That success led Garcia to more recognition in 2016 becoming for his second year, a member of the NASCAR Next initiative that spotlights up and coming future stars of NASCAR. He was also selected for the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Program driving for Rev Racing in the K&N East and finishing tenth in his rookie season.
Last week, Garcia was again selected for the Drive for Diversity program giving him another year with Rev Racing and a chance to earn the K&N East championship this season.
Garcia’s journey continues next month when the K&N East season begins at New Smyrna Speedway on February 19th.
