Editor’s Note: Our interview with Bret Holmes is rescheduled according to the rescheduling of the Five Flags Speedway ARCA East race.
ARCA Menards Series driver Bret Holmes is coming off a great season finishing third in the series point standings last year. This year he’s taking Bret Holmes Racing in a new direction with a new look. And it’s all about winning in 2020.
The organization currently plans on running 14 events this season with new blue and white color scheme representing the No. 23 team. What’s not changing this year is that crew chief Shane Huffman is at the top of the pit box for every race. Last season the duo of Holmes and Huffman worked together garnering eight top-five and 18 top-ten finishes in 20 starts.
“I’m excited to work Bret (Holmes) and the team again this season,” said Huffman. “We made a lot of progress as a group last year, and I know that will help us this season. We have worked hard over the off season and have a strong foundation to build on … We have one goal this year, to win races. We’re going to go out there and do just that.”
Two Races into 2020 Season
So far with two races in, the season is not exactly what they planned on. In the Daytona season-opener, Holmes stated 18th but brought his car to a ninth-place finish at the checkered flag. And not originally scheduled, Bret Holmes Racing took the trip to Phoenix last weekend for the first ARCA Sioux Chief Showdown race in the west. Due to some communications issues, the team finished 15th after starting 11th.
Five Flags Speedway is a Possible Breakthrough
A season turn-around and potential win is possible for Holmes is this week. He’s racing at Five Flags Speedway with the ARCA East. This half-mile paved oval in Pensacola, Florida is where Holmes won a Pro Late-Model championship. He’s familiar with the track and there’s a good chance he’s had this one circled on his schedule for a potential victory.
“Our biggest goal this season is to win races,” said Holmes. “We don’t have to worry about points, so there isn’t pressure from that end of things. As much as we improved over last season, we’ve got a good grasp and will be competitively running… That will give us a good shot at bringing home the win this season. That’s really all we’re focused on this year. We’re doing everything possible to make that happen at BHR.”
Additional races on the schedule are Holmes home track of Talladega Superspeedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Michigan International Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Pocono Raceway, Iowa Speedway, and Kansas Speedway. With more events still pending for BHR, team management is actively meeting with other drivers to fill open races within the 2020 season. Stay tuned in for more on that front at a later date.
