Michael Waltrip will attempt the Daytona 500 in February. But it’s not with the team you would expect.
Waltrip will try to make the Daytona 500 field with Swan Racing in the No. 30. Swan Racing came under new ownership this past off-season and plans to run the full NASCAR season for the first time in the team’s history. David Stremme will remain with the team in 2013 but will have to sit out for the Daytona 500.
Michael Waltrip, a two time Daytona 500 winner, typically attempts to run at restrictor-plate races only as his racing career winds down. But why will he not drive a car from his own team, Michael Waltrip Racing?
In his joking words, “There’s not enough cars.” Waltrip also added that he does not want to distract his organization with extra work of putting together a fourth car for Daytona. So Michael Waltrip found a team in Swan Racing that will give him the opportunity to run in the Daytona 500.
Tony Eury Jr. will crew chief the team for all 36 races including at Daytona. Swan Racing will make its debut with Michael Waltrip and hopes his experience will start the team off on a good note.
