The traditional Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway found itself in an unusual spot in 2004. A big shake-up in the Cup schedule moved the Labor Day date to the second-to-last race in the inaugural Chase for the Nextel Cup.

The 2004 championship was coming down to the wire.  Kurt Busch held the points lead over Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and others. Inclement weather during the weekend cancelled qualifying, giving Busch the pole. Continue reading

Throwback Thursday – Burton Wins in Bizarre Finish at Darlington

Jeff Burton came so close to winning at Darlington Raceway in August 1997. He rubbed fenders with Jeff Gordon in the final laps, but Gordon hung on to win the race and the Winston Million.

Burton won a race in the first three races of the 1999 season by picking up the victory at Las Vegas.

He was still looking for his first win at Darlington. Rain was going to be an issue in the 1999 edition of the TranSouth Financial 400. On lap 43, the race was stopped because of Mother Nature. Continue reading

Logano Overcomes Untimely Late Caution to Become Seventh Different Winner in 2014

Just as the Duck Commander 500 looked as though it was over, a game changing late yellow-flag made for a wild final restart. Joey Logano led before the last caution, but strategy by other teams on pit road led to Logano to restarting third. However, his four tires prevailed over Jeff Gordon and Brian Vickers’ two, allowing Logano to save a win that almost got away. Continue reading

Sprint Cup Series Duck Commander 500 at Texas Preview

With six different Sprint Cup Series winners in the first six races for the season, the question now is, will there be a seventh different winner at Texas Motor Speedway?

Kurt Busch set a Chase for the Sprint Cup era record the moment he hit the finish line to close last Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway – six different winners in the first six races of the season. More amazing is that Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson – the top two winners in the 2013 season – are not among that group.  Neither are marquee winners Kasey Kahne or Greg Biffle or Jeff Gordon or Denny Hamlin.
