The Stockton 150 was a battle between two seasoned drivers in K&N West: David Mayhew and Greg Pursley. Mayhew held off many charges from Pursley to claim his first win since Phoenix in March 2012.
The California native got off to a good start by winning the pole for the race. The 2011 champ Pursley qualified in third. Mayhew led the first ten laps, before being passed by Pursley. Both drivers wouldn’t leave each other view throughout the night.
The No. 17 regained the lead on lap 57 and wouldn’t look back, as Mayhew grabbed his fifth career win in K&N West. Pursley tried everything he could to get around Mayhew, but had to settle for second.
With the race winding down, the urgency to go the front increases. With 30 laps to go, Brandon McReynolds went around, getting some help from James Bickford. McReynolds rebounded to finish fourth, as Bickford wound up tenth.
Mayhew’s win also stopped the Bill McAnally Racing dominance in the West Series, as Cole Custer won at Phoenix and Patrick Staropoli did the same at Irwindale.
Giles Thornton was third, as McReynolds and Thomas Martin rounded out the top-five.
The next race for the K&N Series will be the East-West Combo race at Iowa Speedway on May 17.
