Gabby Chaves lost the 2013 Freedom 100 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway by six inches in a four-wide finish. Driving for the same team that beat him one year ago, the No. 5 car was once again on top. Chaves timed the winning move perfectly, going to the outside of Matthew Brabham to get Belardi Racing back-to-back victories in the Freedom 100.
Brabham, the grandson of Sir Jack Brabham who recently passed away, led most of the race, until losing it by .005 second to Chaves. Matthew’s Andretti Autosport teammate Zach Veach led for a few laps, but finished third. Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports teammates Luis Raiza and Jack Harvey rounded out the top five.
The scariest incident of the day was when former NASCAR driver and current Indy Lights competitor Chase Austin lost control of his car out of turn one and slammed head-on into a tire barrier. Diagnosed with a fractured left wrist Austin was then taken to Methodist hospital for further evaluation. The driver was awake and alert.
With the win, Chaves is now tied with Veach for the points lead. The next Indy Lights race will be at Pocono Raceway on Saturday, July 5.
