Race fans are familiar with Ross Chastian as a Camping World Truck Series driver and this year he’s raced a couple Nationwide Series events and proving he belongs there for the rest of the season. Fans also associate Chastain with one of America’s favorite summer time treats – Watermelon.
Ross Chastain, grew up on a Watermelon farm in Alva, Florida and knew his future was as a race car driver from an early age. His grandfather Jim Prevatt, father Ralph and younger brother Chad have all competed in auto racing events.
Chastain’s racing career started at the age of 12, competing on local short tracks in both the late-model and Fastruck Series events. He scored over fifty wins in feature events including the 2011 World Series of Asphalt at New Smyrna Speedway, winning three of eight events in the series.
Chastain made his NASCAR national series début in the Camping World Truck Series in 2011. Competing in only five events behind the wheel of the No. 66 for TurnOne Racing, Chastain was preparing for a full season in the series in 2012. Driving for SS-Green Light Racing, Chastain finished seventh in his second race of the season at Martinsville. He capped off his rookie year with a career best third-place finish at Bristol in August of that same year.
In 2013 Chastain raced in 14 Truck Series events for Brad Keselowski Racing in the No. 19 car. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Chastain earned two poles, led 229 laps en route to four top-fives finishes, including two second-place finishes and seven top-tens – a breakout year for the Watermelon King.
For the 2014 season, Chastain has piloted the No. 92 for Ricky Benton Racing in the Truck Series at Daytona in February and Martinsville in March. He also made his Nationwide Series début for Viva Motorsports at Charlotte Motor Speedway finishing 18th. This past weekend, Chastain was in another Nationwide Series entry for Hattori Racing Enterprises at Michigan in the No. 80 with a near-top-ten finish at 12th-place in just his second career series’ start.
This young driver is deserving of sponsorship in the Nationwide Series this season. There’s little doubt he’ll prove he belongs in NASCAR’s élite series’ allowing him to write the rest of his racing career story.
