Racing on Father’s Day with his dad, Sprint Cup Series driver Matt Kenseth in attendance, Ross Kenseth made the most of his weekend. The younger Kenseth brought home a top-six finish with Joe Gibbs Racing in his NASCAR XFINITY Series début, the Owens Corning Atticat 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.
The biggest challenge of the weekend was a spin during practice on Friday afternoon, but that didn’t deter Kenseth as he came back on Saturday afternoon and put his No. 20 on the front row during qualifying allowing him to start the rain-delayed race on Sunday in second-place.
“In the last two days we were a lot better than my first day here,” said Kenseth, son of 2003 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Matt Kenseth. “At the end I thought we were really good — a third, fourth-place car — (but) was a little disappointed we didn’t get into the top five. … But the guys worked so hard at it and gave me a great car this weekend.”
Gaining a lot of respect during the last two weekends, all is good for Kenseth as seat time is helping put his name in the NASCAR mainstream as he considers his future options within the sport. Last weekend, Kenseth made his ARCA Racing Series début at Michigan, letting competitors know he came to the track as a serious competitor. Kenseth took the victory!
Kenseth is not sure exactly where all of this leads him for the next step of his career, but rest assured, he’ll be back within the ranks of NASCAR sometime soon.
