The 2015 ARCA Racing Series season is a breakout year for female sensation, Sarah Cornett-Ching. She’s a native of Penticon, British Columbia and brings not only her female perspective into the sport, but a Canadian aspect as well.
“That’s just where I was born and how I got into racing,” Cornett-Ching said in her interview with us. “I really don’t have an extensive racing background like a Ryan Blaney, or some of the people who have been racing, like four times a week since they’ve grown up. I race every weekend from when I was 12 ’til I was 17; and then kinda had to go away from it after I graduated because I didn’t have the money or the resources and had to go to work. So my racing background the past couple years has been pretty slim. It was kinda of crazy when we got here (ARCA Racing Series) and how much success we’re having right away.”
Cornett-Ching now finds herself sixth in the ARCA point standings, collecting four top-tens to-date. Coming from Canada which is not commonly known in terms of the NASCAR realm, Cornett-Ching explains how she got her start from team owner Tony Blanchard.
“I went to Tony’s school of Race 101 in 2011 and he had been working on an ARCA program a few years ago. I had the opportunity to test at Daytona two years in a row and the first year when I tested there I decided I wanted to run the race, but didn’t have the funding. So I worked all year and saved money…welding so I could come back and run the race this year; and then turned some heads and had a few people come on board and see what we could do. So lucky that all worked out and it’s been a dream-come-true.”
Although Cornett-Ching is shining in the spotlight behind the wheel, she has turned some heads off-track as well. Cornett-Ching is often praised by fans as they see such a bright future for the female star. When asked about the role she plays as an ambassador to fans Cornett-Ching went on to say…
“It’s kind of funny because, I don’t feel like I am doing anything different than anyone else. But it’s really neat to have people come up to me and say that they look up to me or just to say they have people meeting me. I had someone (at Chicagoland) say the reason they came to the track was just hoping that they would get a chance to see me and then I got to sign an autograph for them and they really appreciated that. It’s just weird and something to get use to, people looking up to you.”
With big expectations for herself, Cornett-Ching has already set her sights on the goal of becoming the only female to finish in the top-five point standings in ARCA Racing Series history.
“It’s not something that I think about every time I go out on the race track. I still want to do my best at every race, but it would be really nice to do that (finish in the top-five). I think in my rookie season to be able to break that record would be really awesome.”
Although she is living in the moment and enjoying her success in the ARCA Racing Series, Cornett-Ching did shed some light on her longer-term goals, perhaps in NASCAR as well.
“We’re gonna try and move towards more K&N stuff next year and we are doing some K&N stuff this year and the goal is always to keep moving up. I’d love to run some truck (Camping World Truck Series)… and some XFINITY… If that’s possible, next year, just to sprinkle that in… and get some experience. The ARCA Series is really good for getting on these tracks that we’re going to run on in these other series. So that’s what we’re working towards.
It’s easy to say spectators would enjoy watching Cornett-Ching thrive in any series. She’s already proven that she is capable and talented. Reaching her goal of top-five point standings at the end of the season will be interesting to follow, as it could give her the opportunity to work toward her long-term goals too.
Fans can count on Cornett-Ching’s proven ability to race any series, at any track. That ability is again on display this Sunday, July 28th when the ARCA Racing Series is at Winchester Speedway in Indiana.
