A mere two weeks before the Full Throttle S’loonshire 98.9 at Kansas Speedway, the ARCA Racing Series’ 2014 champion was planning to attend the event as the team owner of Mason Mitchell Motorsports. But Karl Chevrolet stepped up giving Mason Mitchell the support he needed to get behind the wheel for the No. 78 team. That decision was a good one with Mitchell earning his third career victory and second of this season – also with Karl Chevrolet.
“This was one of the hardest fought wins in my career,” Mitchell stated after the S’loonshine 98.9 Friday evening.
“It was great to battle my teammate John Wes Townley for the win. He really made me earn this win in the closing laps and pushed me to the limits. It’s a great feeling having your cars running first and second and battling for the win.”
“We had no intentions coming back down to pit-road after our first stop at lap 28. We calculated the mileage and knew we would have just enough to make it. I can’t thank everyone on this MMM team and Karl Chevrolet enough for their support. Without them we wouldn’t have even been here.”
Facing his toughest challenge of the night, teammate John Wes Townley took the lead away from Mitchell with just under 20 laps left in the race. Keeping his focus and running directly behind Townley, 21-year-old Mitchell made the winning pass with six laps left in the 99-lap event.
Mitchell then raced to the checkered flag for the victory with more than a three-second margin over second-place Kyle Weatherman. 2015 ARCA Racing Series champion, Grant Enfinger finished third, with Ryan Reed in fourth and John Wes Townley finishing fifth.
Scaling down his 2015 season to just six events after winning the 2014 ARCA championship, Iowa native Mitchell made the most of his limited times behind the wheel by winning two events including his home state at Iowa and then Kansas. Mitchell also earned four top-fives and five top-tens with an average finish of sixth during his part-time season.
The Kansas victory was also the third win for Mason Mitchell Motorsports with victory celebrations also at Winchester and Iowa during 2015.
