On their last short track race on the season, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Spencer Gallagher and his GMS Team made the most of a challenging day by racing his No. 23 into the top-ten and as high as third before a late race incident and battery issues at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday afternoon.
Gallagher started the Kroger from 20th-place, with typical Martinsville racing and early cautions. During the second caution flag on lap 35, Gallagher brought the No. 23 on pit road with the crew taking care of a tight on exit on throttle issue with four tires and a track bar adjustment. Although the tight condition was still present, a rare forward bite allowed Gallagher to race his way to 13th by the fourth caution on lap 74.
Crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz in his 100th career start used his veteran experience to bring Gallagher to pit road during an off sequence caution. In the ensuing 31 green flag laps, Gallagher advanced his position from 28th to 12th. A caution on lap 122 gave the crew the opportunity for a two-tire stop, allowing Gallagher to restart from third on lap 130. Still battling a tight condition, Gallagher was able to persevere in the top-ten heading into last laps of the event.
With seven laps to go, Gallagher was in a multi-truck incident on the back stretch while running tenth. While on pit road to repair the damage, a battery issue kept the No. 23 on pit road for an extended stop, leaving Gallagher with a 29th-place finish, four laps down.
Gallagher remains tenth in the series point standings with just three laps remaining in the Camping World Truck Series season.
“We had a top-ten truck today, and we showed that by running in the top-five late in the race,” said Gallagher. “We had very good long run speed, but it wasn’t a long-run kind of day. Later on, we put two tires on. It was a great call by Jeff (Stankiewicz) to get some track position. We got a little too tight after that, fell back (in the running order), and got caught up in a couple of wrecks. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll head to Texas (Motor Speedway) where I know my GMS Racing team will bring another great Allegiant Travel Chevrolet. We had a good run in the spring there and hopefully we can build some momentum during these last three races of the season.”
