Tonight NASCAR K&N Pro Series West teams will race their last event of the 2015 season – the Casino Arizona 100 at Phoenix International Raceway – and finally decide who will wear their Championship crown. It’s been a tight contest with four drivers holding the lead spot throughout the year, including current leader, Chris Eggleston. Also leading the points this season are second-place Noah Gragson, third place, Gracin Raz and fourth-place Ryan Partridge.
Eggleston nabbed his second K&N West win at California’s Irwindale Speedway on April 11th and returned to Victory Lane on May 30th for the second time this season with a win at California’s Shasta Speedway.
Gragson earned his first series victory at Tucson Speedway on May 2nd and collected his second win and his first pole at Idaho’s Meridian Speedway on September 5th. Raz recorded his first victory and pole at California’s All American Speedway on October 17th and Ryan Partridge picked up his first career win and pole at Colorado National Speedway on August 22nd.
Any one of them could secure their first series championship title tonight on the Phoenix one-mile paved short track. Heading into the Casino Arizona 100, only 12 points separate the top-four contenders with veteran David Mayhew still in contention. Fifth in the series point standings, Mayhew is 35 points from the lead spot and collected his first win and second pole of the season at Sonoma Raceway on June 27th. He collected his second victory of the season with a win at Washington’s Evergreen Speedway on August 15th.
Another veteran and the 2011 and 2014 K&N West Champion, Greg Pursley is coming out of retirement to race with Jefferson Pitts Racing at the Phoenix – one of the places he considers as his home track. Pursley is tied with Mike Duncan for the most pole awards – four – at Phoenix and has the most top-fives at eight. Although Ken Schrader has the most series wins at Phoenix with four, Pursley is tied with Richard Petty in second with three wins. This is Pursley’s 100th K&N West start and his 13th series’ start at Phoenix where he’s tallied three wins, eight top-fives and ten top-tens.
Other notables to keep an eye on include, three drivers from the K&N East series with HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks – the 2015 Champion, William Byron, JJ Haley and Dalton Sargeant.
William Byron has one start in the West, when he finished fifth, on the road course at Sonoma Raceway earlier this year. JJ Haley finished sixth in the K&N East and competed in one K&N West race this year at Sonoma, finishing third.
Dalton Sargeant finished fourth in the K&N East point standings and in three K&N West starts this year, he’s recorded one win and three top-fives. Sargeant, collected his first K&N Pro Series victory and pole award at the season opener at California’s Kern County Raceway Park on March 28th.
Brandon McReynolds – son of FOX Sports Analyst Larry McReynolds – became the first driver in the K&N Pro Series to earn multiple victories at Iowa Speedway on July 31st. He earned his first career victory and pole award at Iowa Speedway in the K&N Pro Series combination event on May 16th.
Harrison Burton – son of former Sprint Cup Series driver and now NBC Analyst Jeff Burton – made his series début at All-American Speedway in October, finishing 11th and becoming the youngest driver to compete in the series. Burton just announced that he is racing full-time with HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks in the K&N East 2016 season. Todd Gilliland – son of Sprint Cup Series driver, David Gilliland – is making his K&N West début this weekend and in two ARCA races this year, he’s tallied one win and two top-tens.
NASCAR driver, Landon Cassill is making his K&N West début this weekend. With his seven starts at Phoenix in the XFINITY Series, he’s earned one top-ten, a sixth in 2008.
Listen to the K&N Pro Series West season finale, the Casino Arizona 100 at Phoenix International Raceway on Thursday, November 12th at 7 pm ET on MRN radio – the Voice of NASCAR.
