After completing a successful campaign in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East this season – fifth in the series point standings and third in the Rookie of the Year standings – Rico Abreu is now set to make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series début with NTS Motorsports in the Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend. Pending NASCAR approval Abreu will be back behind the wheel of the No. 31 for NTS again at Homestead Miami Speedway for the season finale.
“This is a great opportunity with NTS Motorsports and I think the time is right for me to make my NASCAR Camping World Truck Series début,” says Abreu. “I believe we’re starting out at the right track with Phoenix International Raceway. I’ve heard that it’s a really cool place to race and it’s somewhere I’ve been looking forward to racing. I’m surrounded by a good group of guys who have gotten me pretty comfortable in the truck so far. I just want to thank Bob Newberry, Chris Rice, AccuDoc Solutions and everyone at NTS Motorsports for this opportunity. I hope I can get them a great run.”
Abreu made a splash into the racing scene as a 2014 USAC Midget National Champion and three World of Outlaw victories. To start this season, Abreu won the prestigious Chili Bowl Nationals before beginning his rookie season with HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks in the K&N West while also competing nationally in a midget and winged sprint car.
The 23-year-old Rutherford, CA native won his first K&N West race at Columbus Motor Speedway in July, with Abreu complimenting his season with three poles, four top-fives and eight top-ten finishes.
The 2015 season has also been a success for NTS Motorsports fielding one full-time and two part-time entries in the Camping World Truck Series and tallying five top-fives and 17 top-tens with Daniel Hemric’s first full-time campaign in the series. Hemric is now seventh in the series point standings and second in the series’ Rookie of the Year standings.
Another NTS Motorsports driver, Greg Voigt is now leading the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour championship point standings. He’ll be driving the team’s No. 29 entry in the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on November 21st.
“I could not be more excited to have Rico Abreu joining our NTS Motorsports team for the final two Truck Series races,” said team owner Bob Newberry. “Our team prides itself on providing opportunities for young, up-and-coming drivers, and we have been extremely impressed by his accomplishments in 2015. This season has been our team’s strongest to date and we feel very confident we will visit Victory Lane before this year is through.”
