After winning the inaugural SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Winter Showdown last year, Super Late Model driver, Bubba Pollard, from Senoia, GA added an exclamation point by winning again this year at Kern County Raceway. The first two days, Pollard was not sure, his team would pull off another victory because he was having problems with his car. Then on Sunday morning his team found the problem, fixed it, and two-hours later Pollard was celebrating in victory lane.
“I woke up this morning and really didn’t have much confidence in the race car,” Pollard said. “We struggled all weekend. We found the rear end was broke, I wish we would have found it earlier, it made for a long weekend.
“The guys worked hard, kept digging and never gave up and that’s what got us here.”
Pollard, was fifth after the first 125 laps, but kept moving his way to the front, taking the lead from Gracin Raz after a restart on lap 172. Leading the last 78 laps of the caution-plagued 250-lap race, Pollard brought home $40,000, including a $10k bonus eligible to five drivers.
In the closing laps the defending winner and race leader had his hands full because, looking to take over the lead was NTS Motorsports driver Parker Stephens with his car on the bumper of Pollard’s, No. 26 machine.
“He (Parker Stephens) probably had a better car at the end,” Pollard said. “I knew if we hit our marks and run the line we needed to it was going to be tough for him to pass us. Our cars were pretty equal there, but you have a lot of respect for a guy like that to come out and race you clean in a big event like this is pretty cool.”
Jeremy Doss rounds out the top-three drivers at Kern County Raceway in the second annual SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Winter Showdown.
The Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series begins their regular season at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on April 9th.
