In front of a packed house at Kern County Raceway this weekend, local Bakersfield, CA resident, Derek Thorn dominated all 250 laps of the SRL Southwest Touring Series’ Third Annual Winter Showdown, bringing home a $30,000 bonus for the win. After taking the pole in qualifying, Thorn led every lap in the premi√®re Super Late Model event that included big name¬†drivers such as NASCAR’s Kyle Busch and Erik Jones as well as the Showdown’s winner the last two years, Bubba Pollard.

Thorn has traveled across the country as far as¬†Pensacola, FL to compete in their Snowball Derby,¬†and¬†other premi√®re Super Late Model events including¬†all three years at his home track of Kern County Raceway in the SRL’s Winter Showdown, dreaming of victory. Continue reading

After winning the inaugural SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Winter Showdown last year, Super Late Model driver, Bubba Pollard, from Senoia, GA added an exclamation point by winning again this year at Kern County Raceway. The first two days, Pollard was not sure, his team would pull off another victory because he was having problems with his car. Then on Sunday morning his team found the problem, fixed it, and two-hours later Pollard was celebrating in victory lane. Continue reading

For Super Late-Model drivers and fans, the first weekend of December is for Five Flags Speedway racing including the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby. The best Super Late-Model drivers in the country make the trek to the track in Pensacola, Florida each year in hopes of winning the most exciting, competitive and pressure-packed event of the season. And there was plenty of drama this weekend.

Last year’s Snowball Derby winner, John Hunter Nemechek was on a mission to sweep the weekend by winning both events – the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby. The first part of his plan fell into place when he won the Snowflake 100 on Saturday, but trouble in the late laps of the Snowball Derby ended his hopes when his car went up in flames. Two crew members had injuries, with one treated in the infield care center and the other sent to the hospital for further evaluation. Both were in good spirits according to NEMCO Motorsports.
