Racing along with a few Monster Energy Cup Series regulars, K&N Pro Series West Rookie of the Year contender Will Rodgers had an impressive showing in the Carneros 200 at Sonoma Raceway this weekend.
Bakersfield, California native Kevin Harvick – one of the Cup Series regulars – was in the Jefferson Pitts Racing No. 4 and won the race. But Rodgers, also with Jefferson Pitts Racing in the No. 7, was the only other driver challenging Harvick for the victory. Their closest competitors were more than nine seconds behind when they crossed the finish line.
Rodgers, a 22-year-old from Murrieta, California, won his first Coors Light Pole Award earlier in the day, before finishing in second place – his best finish of his 14 K&N West starts.
“For some funny reason, I had a feeling as far back as four weeks ago that it was going to be me and Kevin coming into turn 11 on the last lap,” Rodgers said. “And sure enough, there we were. He ran a really good race, I learned a lot from him. We were able to lead some laps there in the beginning. It doesn’t feel too bad to finish second today.”
Finishing third was David Mayhew with Michael Self and Derek Kraus finishing fourth and fifth. Series points leader, Todd Gilliland finished sixth, with Blaine Perkins and Todd Souza in seventh and eighth and Chris Eggleston and Cup Series driver Daniel Suarez rounding out the top-ten in ninth and tenth-place.
Gilliland leads Eggleston by just 11 points in the series championship point standings with their Bill McAnally Racing teammate Kraus in third at 56 points behind the leader. Rodgers is fourth, just 12 points behind Kraus.
The Carneros 200 will air on NBCSN on Thursday, June 29th at 11 pm ET.
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West teams return to the track on July 28th for the annual combination race with the K&N Pro East teams at Iowa Speedway.
