In more ways than one, Dalton Sargeant raced hard to close the gap on ARCA Racing Series points leader, Austin Theriault in the Fans with Benefits 150 at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night. Sargeant won the battle by winning the race, and Theriault continues to lead the series point standings 2690 over Sargeant’s 2530 points.

With nine laps left to race, Sargeant knew the last restart of the race would make all the difference between finishing second and celebrating in Victory Lane. From the top-side Sargeant edged ahead of Theriault on the restart, charging his Cunningham Motorsports No. 77 toward the checkered flag for the hard-fought win.

“This was a really tough race overall,” said Sargeant, driver of the No. 77 Performance Plus Ford. “The biggest thing was my Cunningham Motorsports crew…getting us in and out of pit road in great shape. The car was on the free side in the beginning but it tightened up later in the race. The lane moved up where I thought I was at my best.”

After clearing Theriault on the last restart, Sargeant expanded his lead to a full second and a half at the finish line.

After leading 11 laps earlier in the race, Sheldon Creed finished in third-place followed by Michael Self in fourth, who lead 33 laps of the race. Also leading a total of six laps, Kyle Weatherman rounds out the top-five finishers.

The General Tire Pole Sitter, Shane Lee lead a race high 58 laps, but the first-round pit stops shuffled him out of the lead and back in the pack. He eventually finished 11th in the Fans with Benefits 150.

Sargeant took over the lead on lap 109 of the 150-lap race and gave up the lead only once to Theriault on the 141st lap, then regained the lead for good on the last restart.

Finishing sixth was Vinnie Miller with Spencer Davis and Christian Eckes finishing seventh and eighth, then Bret Holmes and Gus Dean came home ninth and tenth.

Up next for the ARCA Racing Series is the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway on Friday night, July 21st.
