With eight laps remaining, Cunningham Motorsports driver Dalton Sargeant drove his No. 77 Ford underneath Michael Self and went on to win the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 on Friday night at Lucas Oil Raceway. The Boca Raton native continues to close the gap on the series points leader, Austin Theriault with nine more races left in the ARCA Racing season.
Mother Nature gave Sargeant a break with just enough rain to bring out the last caution on lap 174. Heading to pit road for four fresh tires with 20 laps remaining, gave Sargeant what he needed to take off on the green flag restart on lap 189.
Catching up with Self, the battle for the lead went on for two laps with Sargeant taking the lead for the rest of the race. The winner beat Self to the finish line by a full second.
“I was just begging there at the end to go back to green,” said Sargeant. “Just a smart call from Chad (Bryant/crew chief) to stay out and pit when we did. Great car…great call. I knew it was going to take everything I had. We closed the points gap a little more…just really excited for the rest of the year.”
Sargeant also won at Iowa Speedway and with his win at Lucas Oil Raceway has now unofficially closed the gap on the points lead to 130 points.
Finishing in third place was Chad Finley after leading 74 laps earlier in the race. Points leader, Theriault was fourth, with his Ken Schrader Racing teammate, Sheldon Creed rounding out the top-five.
Gus Dean, Zane Smith, Bret Holmes, Shane Lee and Christian Eckes round out the top-ten finishers.
Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is Pocono Raceway for the ModSpace 150 on Friday, July 28th.
