After knocking on the door several times this season, ARCA Racing Series driver Chandler Smith with Venturini Motorsports made a breakthrough in a big way on Friday at Madison International Speedway in the Herr’s 200. He led the practice session, took his fourth straight pole of the year and then won the race to sweep the event.
The victory for Smith was not without some challenges as loose tires sent him to the back of the field and about to go a lap down. But then, some luck came his way when on lap 37 Tommy Vigh Jr spun in turn four to bring out the third caution of the night. That caution allowed Smith to pit for his team to fix the tire issues and stay on the lead lap.
“We just had a little luck on our side,” Smith said. “I am really blessed with the group of guys I have behind me. Venturini Motorsports gave me a heck of a Toyota Camry tonight. That was the first time I ever got sprayed by potato chips in victory lane. Pretty wild!”
Smith rallied to finish 11 seconds ahead of the MDM Motorsports cars of Zane Smith, Sheldon Creed, the series points leader, and Chase Purdy. Gus Dean rounds out the top-five finishers. Natalie Decker, Bret Holmes, Eddie Fatscher, Colby Howard, and Toni Breidinger were the next five to cross the finish line.
Creed stays in the series’ points lead by 55 points over Zane Smith. Third place is Riley Herbst, who pulled double duty this weekend, racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Iowa Speedway and finishing sixth. Travis Braden and Chase Purdy round out the top-five in fourth and fifth.
Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is Gateway Motorsports Park for the Papa Nicholas Coffee 150 at 9 pm ET.
