The dynamics of race day with at-the-track action and driver interaction is always fascinating and usually creates a buzz around the NASCAR world and our panel is discussing all the hottest topics leading up to the next race!

This episode includes discussions about, recapping the Nationwide Series race at Darlington with live updates of the Sprint Cup Series race taking place at Darlington and the Goodyear tire testing at Michigan.

Our panel joins the discussion throughout the show and includes Kyle Magda, Stephen McCall and Steve.Billmyer.

Steve Billmyer brings a unique perspective to our Saturday night show. He started at the top, and worked his way down is the way he describes his career. Billmyer was the 4th employee at Hendrick Motorsports and was a tire engineer for nine years. On race day over the years, he was a tire carrier for several different drivers including, Geoff Bodine, Tim Richmond, Benny Parsons, Ken Schrader, and Greg Sacks. Billmyer says he learned about stock car racing from the legendary Harry Hyde and was Crew Chief for 15 years for the Billmyer Racing Late Model Stock Car, partnering with his dad. Drivers who raced their 1st stock car in a Billmyer Racing LMSC were Todd Bodine – CWTS champion, Timothy Peters – CWTS multiple race winner, and Jimmie Johnson – six-time Sprint Cup champion. He was also a Crew Chief for a K&N Pro Series East stock car until his retirement. One of Billmyer’s career highlights includes working as a ‘Technical Consultant’ on the movie “Days of Thunder.”

Throwback Thursday – Johnson Wins Final Mountain Dew Southern 500

The traditional Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway found itself in an unusual spot in 2004. A big shake-up in the Cup schedule moved the Labor Day date to the second-to-last race in the inaugural Chase for the Nextel Cup.

The 2004 championship was coming down to the wire.  Kurt Busch held the points lead over Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and others. Inclement weather during the weekend cancelled qualifying, giving Busch the pole. Continue reading

Throwback Thursday – Burton Wins in Bizarre Finish at Darlington

Jeff Burton came so close to winning at Darlington Raceway in August 1997. He rubbed fenders with Jeff Gordon in the final laps, but Gordon hung on to win the race and the Winston Million.

Burton won a race in the first three races of the 1999 season by picking up the victory at Las Vegas.

He was still looking for his first win at Darlington. Rain was going to be an issue in the 1999 edition of the TranSouth Financial 400. On lap 43, the race was stopped because of Mother Nature. Continue reading

Logano Overcomes Untimely Late Caution to Become Seventh Different Winner in 2014

Just as the Duck Commander 500 looked as though it was over, a game changing late yellow-flag made for a wild final restart. Joey Logano led before the last caution, but strategy by other teams on pit road led to Logano to restarting third. However, his four tires prevailed over Jeff Gordon and Brian Vickers’ two, allowing Logano to save a win that almost got away. Continue reading
