ARCA Racing driver Michael Lira to Test at Talladega Superspeedway

Sixteen-year-old Spruce Creek High School student and race car driver Michael Lira will be heading to Talladega Superspeedway this week to participate in two days of test sessions with the ARCA Racing Series. It will be Lira’s first time running on the legendary Alabama race track and only his second time on a superspeedway. Lira’s previous superspeedway experience came last December, when he tested at Daytona International Speedway in his ARCA car. The testing dates at Talladega are set for April 16 – 17. McMurray Hangs on for Talladega Victory

For the second straight week, a non-Chaser emerges victorious. It was restrictor-plate master, Jamie McMurray, grabbing the Talladega victory on Sunday. McMurray brought his car to the front in the late going and hung on for his first victory since 2010.

Championship contenders, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, paced the field in the beginning of the afternoon. They faded as the laps went on, but both managed to survive the biggest obstacle in the Chase.

Surprisingly, only four cars found wrecks throughout the afternoon. The first occurred on lap 72 when Marcos Ambrose got loose in the tri-oval and spun down the track right into Juan Pablo Montoya. Continue reading →

Sauter Avoids Carnage to Pick Up Plate Track Sweep at Talladega

Dramatic closing laps left Johnny Sauter in victory lane after a chaotic day at Talladega. Sauter had help from teammate Matt Crafton for most of the race. It was Crafton pushing Sauter on the last restart and that propelled Sauter to his third win of the season.

The destiny of the championship battle took a wild turn at Talladega. Throughout the afternoon, many different scenarios arose that could have put a drastic spin to the title hunt. James Buescher led early and was one of the early favorites which would have dramatically helped his championship case. Point’s leader Crafton stayed at the back for a good part of the race, but at the finish, he made a charge toward the front. Continue reading →

Michael Waltrip Racing Reorganizes for 2014 Season

Michael Waltrip Racing announced today their plan for reorganizing for the 2014 Sprint Cup season, featuring two full-time championship contending teams and a third entry running a limited schedules. Their plan also includes a strengthened research and development group.

MWR will continue fielding the No. 55 Aaron’s car and the No. 15 5-hour Energy/Peak car in their pursuit of the 2014 Sprint Cup championship. To support that effort, MWR is bolstering their research and development group and supporting a third car on partial schedule, including Michael Waltrip in the 2014 Daytona 500.

Martin Truex Jr, driver of the No. 56 and his crew chief, Chad Johnston, were given notice, they are free to negotiate with other teams. Scott Miller, the team’s executive vice president of competition, will continue his role as crew chief of the No. 55 team into the 2014 season. Continue reading →
