Joey Coulter: Getting Back on Track

Joey Coulter finally got a finished he deserved in the form of a solid 6th place finish at Rockingham last weekend. Coulter spent the day racing in the top-ten and was finally able to put together the kind of finish this team needed.

After a very successful 2011 rookie campaign, the #22 Camping World Truck Series team at Richard Childress Racing, led by crew chief Harold Holly, has championship aspirations for 2012. However, it’s been a bit of a rough start for this team.

Daytona, which is always a difficult race to get a good result – even if one has a competitive truck – proved to be a very challenging race for this team. Despite running well throughout the race with a fast truck, disaster struck in the closing laps. While running inside the top-ten, with a chance at contending for the win, contact with another competitor sent Coulter into a spin. As Coulter’s machine turned around, it got airborne and flipped wildly into the catch fence, destroying the truck. Fortunately, Coulter would be able to climb out from the battered machine unhurt, but would only be credited with an 18th place finish.

As the team rolled into Martinsville, expectations were high. The team brought the same truck they had earned a top-five finish last fall and were looking forward to getting back on track following Daytona. However, early in the event, a cut tire put the #22 in the wall, which caused damage and ultimately led to extended periods off the track for repairs. A promising day quickly turned into a long day and Coulter was forced to settle for a very disappointing 30th place finish.

Rockingham, however, finally gave the finish this team needed and now has Coulter solidly in 12th position in points. That’s up 12 positions from where he was following Martinsville. And this coming weekend, Coulter and the #22 team come into Kansas with a little momentum and a return to the site of his first career top-five finish.

Perhaps, this time around, Kansas will be the site of his first career win.
