In the rolling Irish Hills of Michigan, there are some meaningful memories of racing and winning for Sprint Cup driver, Carl Edwards. A win this weekend would add to those memories and significance of Michigan International Speedway to his career and his team.
Edwards started his Sprint Cup career at Michigan International Speedway – MIS – in 2004, starting 23rd and finishing 10th. Three years later in 2007, he made his 100th start at the track and won the race ending a long losing streak. Edwards would enjoy nothing more than to get his first 2012 win this Sunday at the same track.
“I remember we ended a long losing streak at Michigan in 2007,” says Edwards. “Any time you win at Michigan it’s big and it’s big especially for the guys who race for Jack – Roush. His business is based in Michigan. We really appreciate everything Ford has done for our sport, Jack and everyone at RFR, so it’s a very special place to win. Victory lane takes a long time there because of all the photos. It’s neat to have guys like Edsel – Ford – and all the folks that support us from a technical and financial standpoint so much that it’s a special place to win. I think everyone in the garage feels that way. It just feels like a home track for us for a number of reasons.”
Edwards new crew chief Chad Norris knows the significance of getting that first win of the season for the No. 99 team.

“I feel really good about the car we are taking to Michigan this weekend,” Norris said. “It’s not a new car, but it has a new body on it and it should be fast. The Roush Fenway cars have always been good at MIS so I’m expecting a strong race with Carl. We’ve got a really cool Geek Squad/West Coast Customs paint scheme that would look really nice in victory lane.”
Adding to the significance of this weekend and cheering Carl Edwards to a win on Sunday is the crew from Inside West Coast Customs who are partnering with Best Buy’s Geek Squad for the No. 99’s car design for the Pure Michigan 400 race. Ryan Friedlinghaus, a NASCAR fan, CEO and star of the reality TV show – Inside West Coast Customs – developed the new design.
“This was a very unique and exciting opportunity for West Coast Customs,” said Ryan Friedlinghaus. “As a devoted NASCAR fan, seeing the WCC design and logo on Carl Edwards’ race car will be an amazing experience. We are filming the unveiling and all the activities throughout the weekend for our TV show Inside West Coast Customs.”
The Inside West Coast Customs Geek Squad/Carl Edwards episode will be airing during the fall season and fans will find the TV show’s schedule online at westcoastcustoms.com on Nov. 1st.
The West Coast Customs team will also feature a display all weekend at MIS in the NASCAR fan zone, featuring a variety of autograph signing sessions and appearances. On Saturday, August 18th, Jack Roush will have a Q&A session with fans and on Sunday, August 19th, Ryan Friedlinghaus – at 9am, and Carl Edwards – at 10am will be at the WCC booth for Q&A sessions. Fans will also be able to get autographs with special guest Dj ASHBA, the lead guitarist for the band Guns and Roses – at 11am.

“The race this weekend is huge for us,” said Carl Edwards. “To have Ryan Friedlinghaus, who designed the paint scheme, and all the West Coast Customs and Geek Squad people there will be really cool. I got a chance to visit Geek Squad City when we were in Kentucky for the race and I met a lot of really great people there who are behind us and I hope we can get a win for them.”
A win at MIS would be huge for Carl Edwards and his No. 99 team, for any chance of contending in the Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship this fall. Edwards tied 2011 champion Tony Stewart in the point standings, but lost the championship due to Stewart’s five wins during the ten-race Chase.
With West Coast Customs, Best Buy’s Geek Squad and Ford cheering him on, now would be a great time for Edwards to turn up the heat with a winning streak of his own, beginning at the track that started his Sprint Cup career, Michigan International Speedway.
