After another Bristol win, Kyle Busch definitely deserves the keys to the Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch has had a tremendous amount of success at Bristol and today’s win in the Nationwide Series race only added to his Bristol dominance. Busch didn’t come away cleanly with this one since rookie sensation Kyle Larson bounced off Busch as they took the checkers and Larson just barely was beaten out. A 2013 turnaround is in full-swing for Busch since he has now won half of the Nationwide Series races this season. Busch is proving he is better than ever this season and today’s victory at Bristol proved that once again.
Pole-sitter Justin Allgaier had a great start to the race where he led most of the first part until pit-strategy put Trevor Bayne out front after a lap 60 caution for a spin by Brad Sweet. Bayne couldn’t stay out front for long, because Kyle Busch was there and Busch took his first lead of the day on lap 76. Championship-contender Elliot Sadler had problems throughout the first 90 laps of the race and by lap 90; Sadler took his No.11 Toyota Camry behind the wall with engine issues.
Caution No.3 came out on lap 106 when a car spinning, turned into a viscous collision. Brian Vickers got into the No.55 of Jamie Dick on the frontstretch and Dick slid off the nose of Vickers and he spun down to the apron and tapped the inside wall. When Dick came back across the track, Nelson Piquet Jr. had nowhere to go and Piquet Jr. slammed into the back of the No.55 car. Both drivers had a bunch of damage and both went behind the wall to end their day. It only took about 100 laps for Bristol to claim its first victim and the track wasn’t done just yet.
The fifth caution of the day featured another large wreck which included four cars. The No.70 car of Brad Teague got into the back of the No.44 of Hal Martin which sent Martin spinning down the frontstretch and Martin had a huge impact with the inside wall. After hitting the inside wall, Martin came back up across the track and Jeffery Earnhardt pinned the spinning car of Martin. Both drivers slid to the apron in turn one when Austin Dillon and Reed Sorenson both made contact with the two wrecked cars causing their cars to suffer light damage. Dillon and Sorenson were able to continue the race but Martin and Earnhardt were done for the day.
When the leaders pitted under caution, Brad Keselowski was able to beat Busch off of pit road and Keselowski was now in control of the field. Many laps later, Regan Smith and Brad Keselowski were battling for the lead when Smith got loose underneath Keselowski and slid into Keselowski, causing some left side damage to Keselowski’s car and Smith lost many positions. No caution came out and Keselowski remained the leader. Just six laps later, Keselowski’s damage caught up with him when he had a tire blow on the backstretch while he was leading the race. Keselowski hit the wall on the exit of turn two and he bounced back across the track and nearly collected Kevin Harvick. Debris was on the track after Keselowski slapped the wall and the caution came out.
Harvick was the new leader on the restart with 100 laps to go. The final 100 laps would be a Harvick, Busch and Larson show. Busch took the lead with 62 laps to go and he never looked back. The eighth and final caution of the day came out with 36 laps to go when Jason White hit the turn two wall. Harvick pitted under caution from the second position and that move cost Harvick the race. The final stretch of the race would be a battle between the two Kyle’s, Larson and Busch. The last lap featured all the action when both drivers were approaching lapped traffic as they went into turn three. Busch went low and Larson went high and as they came off turn four, they were side by side. The lapped traffic in front of Busch was a tad bit faster and Busch beat Larson by a nose to the line. Larson had rubbed up against Busch trying to slow him but, it was not effective. Busch beat Larson out in a classic Bristol finish.
A victory lane celebration awaited Busch as he has gotten very accustomed to this at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Another Bristol win for Busch just proves again that he is the best at Bristol and it will take a certain type of driver to beat him and Kyle Larson was almost that driver today. Busch managed the race well all afternoon and he was rewarded with a victory celebration. Going two for three in the last three Nationwide races for Busch isn’t bad at all. The scary thing about this though, is that Busch is only getting started. Bristol will just be one of many more wins to come this season for the king of Bristol, Kyle Busch.
