The reasons why fans adore the Bristol Motor Speedway were on display during the truck race Wednesday night. Classic Bristol showed up to put on quite a wild show. Action was evident throughout the race and a photo finish was the perfect end to the night. Kyle Busch edged out Timothy Peters in an ending that would fit the term “checkers or wreckers” perfectly.
Youngster Chase Elliot had the field under his rule early in the race and led for the first 62 laps. At that point, it was Timothy Peters’ time to shine under the lights. Peters would have this race by his hold for much of the rest of the event, but late restarts spelled trouble for the winner of this race last season.
No one found Kyle Busch up front for most of the race and a speeding penalty received after a lap 70 caution made sure that was the case. It took him until the last restart, but he eventually worked his way back to his favorite spot at Bristol, the front.
A caution with 23 laps left had many of the lead lap trucks pitting, but two did not. Those two were Timothy Peters and Matt Crafton. Well, the restart made them pay the price for staying out. Crafton’s fuel didn’t pick up in his truck, causing a back up behind him which sent Brad Keselowski spinning on the frontstretch, bringing out the caution. Peters faced similar issues later on the restart lap, but those behind didn’t hurt him nearly as bad as they hurt Crafton.
Once the last restart proceeded, Ryan Blaney was battling the guy who came out of nowhere for the lead. That guy was Kyle Busch and claiming the top spot for the first time of the night with six laps remaining. That was the last lead change of the night, but the action around the lead sure didn’t go away once Rowdy took the top spot.
Peters quickly closed in on Busch after the restart and by the time the white flag came, he was there. Busch had the preferred line going into the turn four for the last time, but Peters was right on his side. They touched coming to the line, but it was Busch crossing it first while Peters got loose and spun down the inside of the track. He nailed the inside wall, but still went home with a second place finish.
Bristol’s keys still belong to Kyle Busch and this race was the proof. He’ll be looking for his second Bristol sweep this weekend when he starts the Nationwide and Cup races. He did it in 2010 and could do it once again this year. Watch out for Rowdy as he attempts to make more magic happen in Bristol this weekend.
