Michael Self in Pursuit of a K&N Pro Series West Title

Michael Self

Michael Self

Michael Self started racing go-carts at age 11, switched to racing open-wheel at age 16 and just two years later, he turned to racing late model stock cars.

In 2006, Self became a member of America’s Champ Car team at Rotax Grand Finals in Portugal and by 2007 he was a Champ Car Rotax Scholarship winner.

Self made his NASCAR debut in 2009 entering two races in the K&N Pro Series West/KNPSW and by 2010, in 12 races, he finished as runner-up for Rookie of the Year and eighth in the point standings. In 2011, Self followed up his rookie year by finishing seventh in the series’ point standings. 2012 brought three wins, eight top-fives and nine top-tens in 15 races, with Self finishing sixth in the series’ point standings.

This season has been a banner year for Self as one of 13 NASCAR Next drivers to watch. Self also has three consecutive wins from Brainerd International Speedway, May 25th to becoming the first KNPSW driver to win the combo East meets West competition at Iowa Speedway, June 7th to just two days later winning a hotly contested race with Cameron Hayley, June 9th at Lebannon Speedway.

In ten races this season, Self now ranks third in the KNPSW point standings, just six-points away from second – Cameron Hayley – and 29-points from Derek Thorn the leader. Just two-points behind Self is Greg Pursley, fourth in the point standings. In addition to his three wins, Self backs up his points position with six top-fives and eight top-tens.

With just five races remaining in the season, this is a highly competitive challenge for the title between Thorn, Hayley, Self and Pursley.  The next race is September 14th at the iON Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park, with the finale of the NKNPS West Phoenix on November 9th at Phoenix International Raceway.

Fans will want to stay tuned in to watch the competition heat up and ultimately who will win the K&N Pro Series championship for 2013.
