A season full of first-time winners added another name to the list Friday night at Phoenix when Erik Jones drove into victory lane. Jones, 17, has been competing on a part-time basis in the Camping World Truck Series with Kyle Busch Motorsports this season. A runner-up finish at Iowa earlier in the season showed Jones’ potential and now a win marks his presence in NASCAR.

Tire issues plagued the race with many drivers bringing out cautions throughout the night due to cut down tires. Miguel Paludo and Ron Hornaday Jr. were among the victims of the failed tires.

Erik Jones made his way to the lead for the first time of the night on the restart after the third caution. Jones’ main competition throughout the night was Ross Chastain who held the lead at points when Jones wasn’t out front.

Multiple restarts put Jones and Chastain up front to battle for the top spot. Chastain looked to have the advantage on most restarts, but Jones nailed the one that matter most – the last one. It was Jones making the last lead change of the race when he went around Chastain with nine laps remaining.

From there, it was smooth sailing as Jones survived the closing laps for his first career victory. Jones becomes the youngest winner in Camping World Truck Series history with this win. He knocked Chase Elliott from that position after Elliott’s win in Canada gave him the title earlier this season.

While Jones was celebrating the win, Matt Crafton was breathing a sigh of relief as he finished high enough to only have to start next weekend’s race to claim the championship. When the trophy is given next weekend, Crafton will celebrate his first career championship. A very consistent season put the No.88 team in a great place and their hard work will pay off at the end of the last race of the season at Homestead-Miami.
