When opportunity knocks, take it, especially if it means fulfilling a life-long dream.
Racing is a life-long journey and Will Kimmel has raced since he could reach the pedals. He’s been dreaming of racing since watching his dad and grandpa race every weekend they could manage. Although Kimmel has had the privilege of racing in several different series, chasing his dreams has included a lot of hard work and as it is with many aspiring drivers, finding funding to make it all happen is at times even harder.
Since 2011 Kimmel has raced a part-time ARCA Racing Series schedule, but without a full-time sponsor, the family run race team has been unable to compete for the championship and run a full season. Despite set backs and limited funding, Kimmel has been able to race seven of ten ARCA events this season with a recent third-place finish at Chicagoland Speedway. He’s also been able to jump into a street stock car to race in the new G.A.R.S. racing series, winning the series opening race at Indiana’s Salem Speedway in May.
This coming weekend, Kimmel’s racing journey continues as he fulfills yet another dream. The Sellersburg, Indiana native will climb behind the wheel of the No. 32 Go Green Racing car for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Kentucky Speedway.
“I’m excited, but also nervous to be able to race at this élite level. It’s a special opportunity and I just want to do my best and finish all the laps.” says Kimmel
Although this will be his first Sprint Cup race, his approach will remain as it has throughout his career. Kimmel goes into every new racing experience ready to learn and make the most of his opportunity.
“There is so much to learn from working with other racers, teams, and cars. I am beyond grateful for this chance. I want to thank Archie St. Hillaire, the team owner, and also Portland Recycling for coming on as an associate sponsor. This has already been such an incredible experience. July 11th can’t get here fast enough!”
The small Go Green Racing team operates out of Mooresville, North Carolina and is working hard to prepare for the 267 lap race at Kentucky Speedway.
The 1.5 mile track in Sparta, Kentucky is only about an hour from home for Kimmel. Even though it’s a relatively close track, the 27-year-old driver has only raced there a handful of times with the ARCA Racing Series, once in a NASCAR XFINITY Series race and once in a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event. When asked about his time at Kentucky Speedway, Kimmel’s affinity for the track was clear.
“I like the track because it is a multi-groove track. The roughness makes for better racing.” said Kimmel
The Sprint Cup Series schedule on Friday, July 10th includes two practice sessions at 10:30 am (local time), with the last practice at 1 pm and qualifying taking place later that day at 5:45 pm. The green flag drops at the Quaker State 400 presented by Advanced Auto Parts at 7:30 pm on Saturday July 11th, with the television broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
