Following yesterday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup qualifying session at Chicagoland Speedway, the sanctioning body disallowed times from four drivers, No. 78 Martin Truex Jr, No. 11 Denny Hamlin, No. 48 Jimmie Johnson, and No. 37 Chris Buescher, relegating them to the rear of the field to start today’s Overton’s 400 race, which now set for 2:32 pm ET.
During the compressed schedule of a two-day show, cars are not run through a pre-qualifying inspection. However, the rule is that post-race, cars must pass the Optical Scanning Station (OSS) on the first pass through inspection or the time is not allowed for the startup of the race.
The No. 17 Ricky Stenhouse Jr machine will also drop to the rear of the field to start the race after unapproved adjustments following q.ualifying, however, he will keep credit for his original starting position.
If this is effective expediting the qualifying procedure times while reducing the number of infractions and penalties, NASCAR should consider implementing this structure for all events.
