Austin Wayne Self is our guest on Fan4Racing NASCAR & Race Talk Review at 9 pm ET on Monday, August 19, 2019. Call 929-477-1790 or tweet @Fan4RacingSite with any questions or comments during our LIVE broadcast.
At Bristol Motor Speedway last Thursday night, NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Austin Wayne Self started 25th and was racing in the top-ten until the last restart turned his result into a 15th-place finish. The AM Racing driver of the No. 22 is riding a wave of momentum after finishing fifth at Michigan International Speedway a couple of weeks ago. Now with a road course on the schedule this week at Candian Tire Motorsports Park, Self is already looking forward to getting back on the track.
“I was really with how our night was going at Bristol, battling in the top-ten after starting 25th,” says Austin Wayne Self after the Bristol race on Thursday night. “Just got unlucky starting on the outside lane during the last restart and got drove up the race track.
“We’ll take this finish and move on to Canada and go road course racing. Road courses is where I started and the fans there are awesome, so I can’t wait.”
This season is the best of Self’s Truck Series career with two top-tens and one top-five finish. In addition to his top-five at Michigan, Self finished ninth in the season opener at Daytona, and sixth more recently at Kentucky Speedway in July. His 15th-place finish at Bristol helped him maintain his 13th-place in the series point standings. Self is looking to move up the standings throughout the remainder of the playoff season.
The top-eight drivers in the Truck Series are competing for the championship title with Canadian Tire Motorsports the second race in the Playoff Round of 8 on Sunday, August 25th at 2:30 pm ET. The first elimination race will take place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday, September 13th at 9 pm ET.
The top-six drivers after Las Vegas will move on to the Playoff Round of 6 with the first race at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday, October 12th at 1:30 pm ET. Then, Martinsville Speedway on October 26th at 1:30 pm ET, and the elimination race at ISM Raceway at Phoenix on November 8th at 8:30 pm ET.
The Playoff Final Four Gander Outdoors Truck Series drivers will finally compete at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday, November 15th at 8 pm ET with just one driver (the highest finisher) winning the 2019 championship title.
For Austin Wayne Self, although he’s not in the Truck Series Playoffs this season, every remaining race is a chance to gain points to improve his points position. For fans, this means in addition to the racing at the front for the title, there will most likely be the rest of the field racing for their best possible points standings for the season. Self is hungry for more top-five/ten finishes and perhaps even a victory to round off his 2019 season. At this point, the focus for the rest of this year is on race-by-race to set-up their best possible start for the 2020 season.
