Darlington Raceway Partners With Local School District To Launch Reading Program

In an effort to help its area school children participate in reading, Darlington Raceway is partnering with the Darlington County School District to kick off a reading program for “March is Reading Month.”

Starting on March 1, over 5,400 elementary school kids in the district will participate in the program and each classroom will have reading goals to achieve throughout the month. Each student will receive a Darlington Raceway bookmark and reading reminder bracelet courtesy of the track.

“We want our children to excel in school and grow up to make a positive impact in the world we live in,” Darlington President Chris Browning said. “We are more than happy to utilize our resources at the track to encourage a child to read more and improve their education.”

When the program concludes on March 29, the classrooms with the most books read will receive a visit in April from select NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers yet to be determined. Elementary schools in Darlington, Hartsville, Lamar and Society Hill will be participating.

All participants in the program will also receive a free kid’s admission ticket for the Nationwide Series 200 on Friday, May 10.

The Reading Program is just one of many that the track has created over the years as part of its youth initiatives. It also offers one of the best kids ticket offers in the industry with 12 and under half-price for any seat to the Bojangles’ Southern 500.

“We appreciate Darlington Raceway putting this reading program together for us. The impact it will make on our students and the encouragement it will provide them to read is invaluable for us,” Audrey Childers, communications officer for the Darlington County School District said. “Having a track like Darlington in our community is great because they enjoy doing these types of programs for our kids and want them to be successful in the classroom.”

No. 48 Team Celebrates Second Daytona 500 Triumph at Champion’s Breakfast

Following his second victory in the “Great American Race,” driver Jimmie Johnson, crew chief Chad Knaus and owner Rick Hendrick inducted the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet into the Daytona International Speedway Ticket and Tours Building during Monday’s annual Champion’s Breakfast.

“The night was great,” Johnson said of the celebration. “We had a lot of fun in the infield. I think the security guys knew we were here and said, ‘Nice job celebrating, now you guys just need to slow down a little bit.’ ”

Johnson’s late night celebration might have gone well, but his immediate celebration after taking the checkered flag wasn’t as successful. His burn out in the tri-oval grass actually damaged the front end of the No. 48 car that is now on display in the indoor Gatorade Victory Lane at the “World Center of Racing.” Continue reading →

Bruton’s Big Bonus Adds One Million More Reasons For Drivers To Get Up on the Wheel in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race

When the money’s on the line, NASCAR’s best drivers better keep their feet on the gas.

With a $1 million payday, the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway already offers the richest per-mile winner’s purse in motorsports at more than $7,400 for each mile raced. But this year, the pot gets even sweeter with the introduction of Bruton’s Big Bonus. When NASCAR’s best take to the high banks of the legendary 1.5-mile superspeedway, drivers will have a million more reasons stay up front from the first green flag until the checkered falls. If one driver wins all four 20-lap segments and bests the field in the final 10-lap shootout, he will double his winnings and take home Bruton’s Big Bonus of an additional $1 million. allstar_13_250x150NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway announced Tuesday a new format for the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Reinforcing the need for speed and going all out for the win, the format for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race that will put added emphasis on finishing well in each of the five segments. The sport’s annual classic is set for Saturday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. (live on SPEED) at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The new wrinkle that should have the fans and the competitors excited: the running order at the completion of the fourth segment (Lap 80) will be repositioned based on the average finish for the first four segments directly behind the caution car prior to the opening of pit road for the mandatory four-tire pit stop. The order of the cars returning to the track will determine the starting order of the fifth segment. Running order ties will be broken by the finish of the fourth segment. This revision puts a premium on making all of the laps count leading up to the final 10-lap shootout with the race winner earning a $1 million pay day from Sprint. Continue reading →
