Sam Hornish Jr., who hadn’t been in a car in 210 days, gave himself the perfect Father’s Day present on Sunday – a dominant victory in the sixth annual NASCAR XFINITY Series American Ethanol E15 250 presented by Enogen at Iowa Speedway.

Hornish, who last competed in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race last November at Homestead-Miami Speedway, received a call Monday from Joe Gibbs Racing to substitute for injured driver Matt Tifft. There was no doubt that Daniel Suarez would eventually get his first NASCAR National series victory at some point – the only real question was when?

The answer to that question came this weekend at Michigan International Speedway when the NASCAR Next and Drive for Diversity alum won the Menards 250 on Saturday afternoon, making history as the first Mexican born driver to earn a victory in a NASCAR national series event.

Daniel Suarez was speechless—and justifiably so.

The first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR national series race, Suarez overcame a pit road speeding penalty assessed on lap 29 of 125 under the first of three cautions. He restarted eighth after the third caution on lap 91, caught and passed Elliott Sadler for second place with ten laps left and ran down Busch for the lead on lap 124. Continue reading

The maiden voyage of the NASCAR XFINITY Series at Pocono Raceway was shorter than planned, but race winner Kyle Larson wasn’t complaining.

NASCAR awarded the checkered flag in the Pocono Green 250 to Larson when the race was red-flagged after 53 of 100 scheduled laps and then called because of persistent rain.

The victory was Larson’s first of the season and fourth in the series, but it was a source of frustration to runner-up Erik Jones, who arguably had the fastest car and was closing rapidly on Larson when a rain shower blew in from the west and stopped the action. Continue reading
