Sean Epperson, division traffic engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation talked Monday about how DOT partners with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and city and track officials to handle increased traffic around Charlotte Motor Speedway during major events like this weekend’s Bank of America 500.

In preparation for race week at Charlotte Motor Speedway Oct. 10-12, speedway officials want to make sure race fans and area residents are fully equipped to handle race day traffic by providing safe and efficient travel routes and information.

With help from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), Charlotte Motor Speedway is working to ease travel for fans heading to and from the races. The heaviest traffic is expected on I-85, U.S. 29, N.C. 49 and Bruton Smith Boulevard.

Fans can now bid on a “Ride of A Lifetime” auction with some of the biggest stars in NASCAR or other exciting VIP Bank of America 500 weekend experiences, all while helping support Speedway Children’s Charities.

With the Bank of America 500 race weekend coming up, Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) is offering many ways for fans to enhance the fan racing experience. Through next week, various auctions are available online such as a Ride of a Lifetime with the stars of NASCAR, a meet & greet with prerace concert act the Goo Goo Dolls and other VIP experiences, including a trip to Victory Lane. Besides auctions, fans can donate directly to this great cause and attend SCC-sponsored functions such as NASCAR Night and the Ultimate Fan Track Walk where 100 percent of the proceeds support SCC programs. Matt Kenseth may have won Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Kansas Speedway, but Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski provided the most explosive fireworks in a wild race that featured 11 cautions in 200 laps.

Kenseth pulled away after a restart with five laps left and won going away, as Paul Menard edged Regan Smith for second on the last lap. Busch ran fourth after causing the last caution by sending Keselowski into the fence on Lap 188. Continue reading

NASCAR D4D Combine20 Drivers Slated To Compete For 2014 Seat With Rev Racing 

As the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program approaches its ten-year anniversary, NASCAR and Rev Racing have selected the participants for the 2013 NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine. The drivers will participate in a rigorous on- and off-track evaluation process for the opportunity to join the NASCAR D4D program and compete for Rev Racing during the 2014 season. No. 22 Team and Nelson Piquet Jr receive NASCAR Penalties

No. 22 NASCAR Nationwide Series Team Penalized

290967Penalties have been levied to the No. 22 NASCAR Nationwide Series team as a result of rules violations committed last Saturday at Dover International Speedway.

During post-race inspection Sept. 28, the No. 22 car was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to the NASCAR rules detailed in Section 20-A of the NASCAR rule book, or has been approved by NASCAR prior to the event); and 20A-12.8.1(B) (the car failed to meet the minimum front car heights) of the 2013 rule book.

As a result of this violation, crew chief Jeremy Bullins has been fined $10,000 and owner Roger Penske has been docked with the loss of six championship series car owner points. Continue reading
