It was throwback Sunday at Daytona International Speedway with an old-school starting time, and an old-school win.

The green flag waved in the morning. Mid-afternoon, Richard Petty Motorsports’ famed No. 43 was back in Daytona’s Gatorade Victory Lane thanks to Aric Almirola’s rain-shortened win in the 56th Annual Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola. Thirty years ago – July 4, 1984  – Petty won this race, the last of his 200 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories. Continue reading

The first half of the 1994 Winston Cup season the black cars dominated.  Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt and Ernie Irvan together had 11 wins in the season’s first 14 races.

Wallace was on a three-race winning streak heading into the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway.  The Missouri driver’s luck at the track has been short of disastrous. Continue reading

Sprint Cup Series Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Preview

The Race to the Chase for the Sprint Cup countdown begins at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday night, as the first of ten races left in the series’ regular season.

Six seats are still available and a win is a virtual lock into the Sweet 16 Chase Grid. With ten winning drivers already on the grid and five of them with multiple victories, there is speculation about whether any new winners will emerge over the next ten races, making points critical for those drivers without a win.
