It may have taken awhile, but the race ended in triumph for Trevor Bayne. After two rain-delays, the Nationwide Series Race at Iowa Speedway finally ran in its entirety on Sunday morning and afternoon. It looked like Austin Dillon was going to run away with the race, but a late race battle sent Bayne to the top spot and Dillon had to settle for second. The race had a decent amount of action and ended with a familiar car doing a burn-out on the frontstretch – the no. 6 car.
Austin Dillon began the race up front and was able to hold onto the lead through the first caution of the morning. The yellow-flag was displayed for a lap three wreck which involved Cole Whitt, Brad Sweet, and Kevin Swindell. Whitt got into Sweet heading into turn two and that sent Sweet sliding up the track into Swindell. All three cars involved had damage that needed repairs, but Swindell was the only one who had to go to the garage.
On the restart, Dillon could no longer hold off Sam Hornish Jr. and Hornish went to the lead on lap nine. Exchanging the lead occurred one more time on lap 25 when Dillon retook the top spot. The second caution of the race came out on lap 51 when Brian Vickers spun in turn two while battling with Trevor Bayne for fourth position.
After a lengthy green-flag run, a debris caution came out and stacked the field on the restart. Bayne snagged the lead on the restart, but Dillon fought back with 95 laps remaining. That lap also featured the fourth yellow-flag of the day and this time it was for a massive pile-up in turn two. Alex Bowman got loose under Brian Vickers and sent Bowman sliding up the track along with Vickers. Travis Pastrana had nowhere to go and piled in as well. While Pastrana was sliding down the track, he nailed Max Papis in the side of the car which sent the back of Papis’ car into the air.
A major cleanup was in-store after the wreck and Mother Nature made another visit before the race could go back to green. A rain shower soaked the track again prompting another rain-delay. After the track was fully-dry again, the race resumed with Dillon pacing the field.
The final caution of the day came out with 78 laps remaining when Drew Herring made slight contact with Michael Annett off of turn two which caused Annett to go around on the backstretch and hit the inside wall. The problems under this caution didn’t end for Annett. While he was trying to catch back up to the field for the restart, he blew a tire and spun out on the frontstretch.
A race for the lead that characterizes this day in Iowa evolved in the last fifteen laps. Bayne caught Dillon and they had a side-by-side battle for the lead for many laps. They made contact and almost wrecked, but Bayne cleared Dillon for the top spot with 11 laps remaining. Bayne didn’t look back and the newlywed took the checkers for his first win of the season.
This season hasn’t been the greatest so far for Bayne, but this could be a turning-point as he looks to prime himself for a championship run. Getting married earlier in the week worked out very well for Bayne as it landed him in victory lane at Iowa following the longest race weekend of the season. Rain was the name of the game all weekend, but the race wrapped up Sunday afternoon and it turned out well for Trevor Bayne.
