What more could Penske Racing want? A one-two finish with their drivers, with a win and the point standings lead. That is a very successful day for the organization as they leave Chicagoland Speedway with their heads held high.
When Joey Logano could be relaxing on the beach, he was pulling into victory lane for the second time in the Nationwide Series this season. Just about every other Cup driver took the week off, but Logano was hard at work trying to boost Penske’s No.22 owner championship chances. Well, it was worth skipping a week of vacation to pull into victory lane instead and that’s exactly what Joey Logano did Sunday afternoon at the Chicagoland Speedway.
To start off the race, it was Logano’s teammate Sam Hornish Jr. in control leading until the first caution on lap 48. Then a speeding penalty on pit road put him at the rear of the field and the rest of the race was now catch-up time for the championship contender.
Logano shot to the top spot for the first time of the race on lap 54, but his time up front was short-lived with Elliot Sadler storming past him four laps later.
Destiny was at play in the point standings, with problems plaguing the top-two candidates. Hornish Jr. had the pit road penalty and with 72 laps remaining, Regan Smith spun through the grass, bringing out a caution. Although both drivers recover, their point positions switch in the standings.
Sadler and Logano spent time playing leader tag again with around 60 laps remaining, but on the second-to-last caution of the day, neither found the lead. Instead, it was Hornish Jr. stealing the lead on the restart.
With a yellow flag waving and 22 laps left to run, this restart gave fans another showcase of the Penske cars. This time, it was Logano taking the lead, refusing to give up his top-spot for the rest of the event.
Logano wasn’t the only winner with a checkered flag at the end of the race; Austin Dillon‘s third-place finish gave him the Nationwide ‘Dash 4 Cash’ $100,000 bonus for the second straight week. Hornish, Dillon, Sadler, and Vickers are the ‘Dash 4 Cash’ contenders dueling it out for the last incentive race of the season at Indianapolis next weekend.
Indiana is calling all drivers for their second-ever Nationwide Race on the historic circuit in Indianapolis. Fans tuning in last year, saw some controversy and perhaps more will show up next Saturday afternoon.
