For the second straight week, a non-Chaser emerges victorious. It was restrictor-plate master, Jamie McMurray, grabbing the Talladega victory on Sunday. McMurray brought his car to the front in the late going and hung on for his first victory since 2010.

Championship contenders, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, paced the field in the beginning of the afternoon. They faded as the laps went on, but both managed to survive the biggest obstacle in the Chase.

Surprisingly, only four cars found wrecks throughout the afternoon. The first occurred on lap 72 when Marcos Ambrose got loose in the tri-oval and spun down the track right into Juan Pablo Montoya.

Following the last round of green-flag pit stops, taking place with around 30 laps left to run, Kyle Busch put his car out front. Busch, as many drivers did throughout the day, went to the lead to only fall back laps later.

With 14 laps remaining, Jamie McMurray made his first appearance at the front. He held the lead from that point and a late caution gave him his victory. A string of cars raced through turn two on the backstretch on the last lap when Austin Dillon‘s loose car, while running in third, spun across the backstretch and right through the racing groove. Casey Mears had nowhere to go and plowed into the back of Dillon’s car. The impact sent Dillon’s car into the air and the No.14 eventually came back to the ground on all four wheels.

NASCAR threw the yellow flag and the race ended with McMurray out front and declared the winner. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was running second at the time of the caution. He was planning a pass on McMurray, but the yellow flag took away that possibility leaving Earnhardt Jr. without a victory.

McMurray broke his long winless spell with a Talladega victory – his best track. While the No.1 team celebrated in victory lane, it was Johnson celebrating as well taking over the points lead from Kenseth. Kenseth had a head-scratching 20th place finish leaving him in need of a rebound if he wants the title by the Homestead-Miami finale. .
