Jeff Gordon didn’t have the most dominant car on Saturday night at Kansas Speedway, but he was strongest when it all counted.
His victory tremendously aids the No.24 team as they now are pretty much a lock for the Chase. The team has proven consistency in the first ten races, however without a win, consistency means nothing. Now his season means so much more as he will have a have a shot at his fifth title.
Until Gordon grabbed the lead late on Saturday night, it was Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano’s race. Harvick absolutely crushed the field in certain portions while Logano led on multiple occasions.
Marring the 5-Hour Energy 400 were large and violent wrecks. The first of three came on lap 60. David Ragan’s car broke loose off turn four and started spinning across the track. Ryan Truex skidded into Ragan’s car and then slid down and collected Landon Cassill. Ragan and Truex received the most damage in the incident.
Lap 150 featured a fiery wreck involving Jamie McMurray who slammed the wall in turns three and four. His car caught fire after hitting the wall, with his crew extinguishing it once he made it to pit road.
The most vicious incident came with 81 laps to go. A.J Allmendinger broke loose coming off turn four and spun down across the track. He tagged Justin Allgaier while spinning and sent Allgaier straight up the track. David Gilliland plowed Allgaier’s spinning car causing extensive damage to both machines. Fortunately, all drivers were okay after the incident.
As the race neared its conclusion, Harvick held the top spot until the last round of green flag pit stops. Once the round of stops cycled through, Gordon led the way. The only challenge Harvick was able to make came on the last lap when he got within feet of Gordon’s bumper on the front straightaway.
Gordon only led the last nine laps on Saturday night. He never was a major contender until late, but he stayed consistent throughout and pounced on the leaders at the right time
The Sprint Cup Series is at the Charlotte Motor Speedway next weekend for the Sprint All-Star Race where one driver will walk away with one million dollars.
