NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide Races Defy Rain Thanks To Track-Drying Technology 

Last Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5 at Talladega Superspeedway, a strong spring storm deposited more than an inch of rain on the grounds around the largest venue in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Despite some breaks in the clouds both days, the 2.66-mile track was soaked at the most inopportune times – just before the start of the NASCAR Nationwide Series (May 4) and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (May 5) races. Statement from Joie Chitwood III on the missed Economic Development and Job Creation Opportunity for the State of Florida

“We are clearly disappointed by the outcome last week in the Florida Legislature.  We made a very compelling case for what could have been a successful public / private partnership with the State of Florida to create jobs and generate real economic growth.  We also had substantial local, regional and statewide support.

“However, given this setback to our project, we are forced to reassess the proposed redevelopment and closely examine a number of factors such as its timing, size and scope, before we decide on next steps.”

Kurt Busch, Trevor Bayne to test at MIS on May 14-15 

MISLogoNASCAR’s new Gen-6 Car has drawn rave reviews from drivers and fans alike after the first 10 races in 2013.

On May 14-15, the car will make its debut at Michigan International Speedway when two teams conduct a test. And fans are invited to watch free of charge.

Speedway officials will open the Turn One grandstands from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 14 and May 15 to watch testing. So far, Kurt Busch and Trevor Bayne are the only drivers schedule to test those days.  Continue reading →

Baseball Icon Chipper Jones to Serve as Grand Marshal for Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway

Former Major League Baseball icon Chipper Jones, believed by many to be a future “first-ballot” Hall of Famer, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, May 5.

Jones, who played for the Atlanta Braves throughout his entire 19-year career and was a fan-favorite across the country, will give the most famous command in all of motorsports to the 43-car field: “Drivers Start Your Engines!”  Continue reading →
