Inman Created the Role of the NASCAR Crew Chief, Set to Enter International Motorsports Hall of Fame

Dale Inman was a soft-spoken, hard working, natural-born creative leader who basically wrote the book on how to be a crew chief in NASCAR. Prior to his arrival in the sport in 1958, there wasn’t a blue print on how to get the most out of a race car, now how to organize – or get the most out of – a team.

“It was definitely a learning curve because it was all new to us,” said Inman, who will join his cousin Richard Petty and Uncle Lee Petty as a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 2, at the Speed Dome just outside of Talladega Superspeedway. “There wasn’t any glamour to it, that is for sure, so you just did what you had to do. If you had to work all night and drive the truck with the race car to a track the next day, you did it. I can tell you it wasn’t always easy, but we learned something new each day.” Continue reading

Donnie Allison Book Re-Released; Set for Signings During Aaron’s Dream Weekend

Talladega Superspeedway is proud to congratulate legendary “Alabama Gang” member Donnie Allison and local author Jimmy Creed on the re-release of their book “Donnie Allison … As I Recall.”

Fans visiting Talladega Superspeedway for the upcoming Aaron’s Dream Weekend (May 3-5) will have several opportunities to meet Donnie and the author, buy the book and get it autographed.

Allison, as well as Creed, will do book-signing sessions at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame adjacent to Talladega Superspeedway from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 3, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. They will also meet and greet fans who attend the Aaron’s 499 on Sunday, May 5, during another book-signing session to be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. adjacent to the track’s Allison Grandstand.  Continue reading

downloadRick Hendrick’s journey began on his family’s tobacco farm, a stone’s throw from the small Virginia community of Palmer Springs. It was there, south of Richmond near the North Carolina border, where his father instilled the value of a hard day’s work and a pure passion for the automobile.

Under the watchful eye of “Papa Joe,” that love of cars led Hendrick into the world of auto racing. At age 14, he made a name for himself by setting speed records at a local drag strip with a self-built 1931 Chevrolet. Two years later, the self-described “gearhead” won the Virginia division of the Chrysler-Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest, a competition for engine builders. He was just 16. Continue reading
