Kyle Busch was running the full Busch Series schedule and kicked off his season with a win in the ARCA opener at Daytona. Bobby Gerhart Racing teamed up with Hendrick to run Blake Feese, Kyle Krisiloff, and Boston Reid in the team’s No. 5 car in select ARCA races. When Will Johnson, Kenseth Quench Wins Thirst?
Here’s a stat that properly illustrates how weird this Jimmie Johnson/Matt Kenseth “drought” is: The last time neither won any of the first eight races, Johnson wasn’t even in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series yet.
The year was 2001. Johnson was in his second full season of NASCAR Nationwide Series competition. Kenseth was in his second full season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and battling a bit of a sophomore slump. He went winless and finished outside the top-ten in the last championship standings. With six different Sprint Cup Series winners in the first six races for the season, the question now is, will there be a seventh different winner at Texas Motor Speedway?
Kurt Busch set a Chase for the Sprint Cup era record the moment he hit the finish line to close last Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway – six different winners in the first six races of the season. More amazing is that Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson – the top two winners in the 2013 season – are not among that group.
