Despite both Stewart-Haas Racing drivers Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick earning top-ten finishes in Sunday’s Hellman’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, there was apparent tension between the two drivers post-race.
2015 Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick was upset with teammate Kurt Busch following Sunday’s 192-lap race after he claimed Busch hit his car after the checkered flag flew.
“He cleaned the side of our car out after the checkered flag,” Harvick told NBC Sports. “Didn’t have a scratch on it until then. That’s pretty good for Talladega.”
Harvick appeared to reach into Busch’s No 41 Chevrolet as the 2004 Cup champion sat on pit road. He claimed Bush didn’t have a good explanation for the contact on the backstretch, and a team meeting was likely imminent for the SHR drivers.
Busch, however, said it was “a misunderstanding of the call at the end of the race,” and mentioned Harvick would get over the episode.
“He’ll understand it, and I’m sure he’ll clear it up in his interview,” Busch also said on NBC Sports. “For us, we’re great teammates. We’re doing good together. We have to work together to beat all these other teams out there”
With their efforts in the Round of 12 Sprint Cup elimination race Sunday, both SHR drivers advance to the Round of 8 which begins on Oct. 30 at Martinsville Speedway.
Harvick and Busch join fellow Chevrolet teammate Jimmie Johnson, all four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers (Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth) and Talladega winner Joey Logano for the coveted four spots for the championship round at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 20. The final elimination race occurs at Phoenix International Raceway on Nov. 13
