Logano Wins at Talladega, Knocks Earnhardt Out of Chase

Through no fault of his own, Joey Logano may have achieved the most unpopular sweep in NASCAR history on Sunday afternoon.

Why? Because his victory in the CampingWorld.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway knocked Dale Earnhardt Jr. out of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup—by a matter of inches.

When NASCAR threw the third caution of the race moments after the first bona fide attempt at a green-white-checkered-flag restart on lap 195—with Kevin Harvick’s engine turning sour and cars wrecking behind him—Logano was inches ahead Earnhardt. Continue reading

Logano Locked-in on NASCAR’s Biggest Stage

If the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup is a stage, then Joey Logano is its leading man.

Logano has proven ‘the moment’ isn’t too big for him.

A year after posting the best average finish during the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup (6.4), Logano has won the first two races of the 2015 Contender Round and is the only driver guaranteed to advance to the Eliminator 8 Round heading into Sunday’s CampingWorld.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. His average finish in the Chase this year – 4.2. For context, the best average finish through an entire Chase was Carl Edwards’ 4.9, set during the last ten races of 2011.

On the season, Logano has tied his career-best total in wins and has set career highs in top-fives with 19, top-tens with 25 and Coors Light Pole Awards with five. His win at Kansas marked the first time in his career he’s recorded consecutive victories.

Logano noted how nice it is to relax going into Talladega, but the next round presents challenges. Continue reading

Kevin Harvick rides dominant No. 4 Chevrolet to fourth straight Phoenix win

Yes, the best car won Sunday’s CampingWorld.com 500 at Phoenix International Raceway — but one-man juggernaut Kevin Harvick had to hold off charging Jamie McMurray on the final restart with 12 laps left to notch his fourth straight victory at the one-mile track.

The box score will show that the reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champ led 224 of 312 laps, but McMurray took his best shot on the Lap 301 restart, driving hard to the inside of the race winner and, for the briefest of moments, clearing Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet off Turn 2. Bloomin’ Onions May Become Scarce After NASCAR Visits Phoenix

Every time Kevin Harvick finishes in the top-ten, customers at Outback Steakhouse can get a Bloomin’ Onion the following day. If there is not a Bloomin’ Onion shortage already – since Harvick is riding a streak of six straight top-two finishes dating back to Texas last year – there will likely be one following Sunday’s CampingWorld.com 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. The No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing driver has won the last three events at PIR and holds the all-time track record with six victories.

How historic is Harvick’s run of top-twos? Continue reading

CampingWorld.com 500 at Phoenix Preview & Fantasy Picks

Zachs-SCS-Preview-Fantasy-Picks

Here are my Preview and Fantasy Picks for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series CampingWorld.com 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on March 15, 2015. Watch the action at 3:30 pm ET on FOX.

Contenders

Dale Earnhardt Jr – This team has looked great so far in 2015 and I don’t think that goes away at Phoenix. Jr has shown consistent speed and I feel he will be a big player Sunday.

Carl Edwards – The last man to beat Kevin Harvick at Phoenix? This guy. He hasn’t shown great speed so far in 2015 but he has run well here and can get the job done.

Brad Keselowski –  Has not shown speed similar to Logano, but I like how Paul Wolfe has adjusted to the track throughout the race. I see this team getting better and better every week.  Continue reading
