2-For-2: Penske Proves It’s Contender Round Material

How quickly the tide can turn.

All summer it looked like a Hendrick Motorsports driver would take the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, but now a new team has seized the title of favorite.

With victories in four of the past five races, including the last three in a row, Team Penske drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have asserted the racing outfit as the organization to beat moving forward in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Keselowski (5) and Logano (4) lead the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in wins and have each locked themselves into the Contender Round with victories in the first two Chase races. Logano Wins at New Hampshire as Chaotic Race Scrambles Chase Standings

Out of the maelström that was New Hampshire Motor Speedway sped Joey Logano, who took control of Sunday’s Sylvania 300 on a restart with 27 laps left and held on to win the second race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

 

But the crux of Sunday’s race wasn’t about Logano’s fourth victory of the season and the second straight for Team Penske in the Chase. Kasey Kahne races his way to his first victory of the season and secures his place in the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

With his Chase hopes hanging on a win, Sprint Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne rang the bell for Hendrick Motorsports and his No. 5 team with a victory in the Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday night.

After losing ground on a late caution that set up two green-white-checkered finishes, Kahne threaded the needle between the leader, Matt Kenseth and a hard-charging Denny Hamlin to take a thrilling win. Continue reading

Jeff Gordon Takes the Win and the Points Lead at Michigan

Pole-sitter, Jeff Gordon took the lead from Logano with 17 laps remaining in the Pure Michigan 400 to take his third win of the season, and regain the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points lead.

“The last one, I thought he had a good start.  But I had a good one, too,” said Gordon. “I really think what happened to him on that last restart was Kevin was having some trouble getting going.  This is a big, fast place.  There’s a draft there.  My lane moved along as a group.  Even though Joey got out there, he was sort of sitting on an island by himself.  We kind of tracked him down.  I was able to get to his left rear.  When I got to his left rear, drug him back, gave me a ton of momentum.  I was able to get to the bottom and get by him.”
