Multi-Zone Tread Tire Increases Grip, Durability
Its debut set records. Its encore offered a taste of what’s to come.
“It” is the innovative “multi-zone tread” Goodyear tire that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers tested Thursday at Kansas Speedway, and will use during Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400, the fourth race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup (2 p.m. ET on ESPN, Motor Racing Network Radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio).
Goodyear developed two zones on the right side tires: the outer zone dubbed the “traction zone” – which was made of a sticky and more grip-oriented compound – and the “inner zone” – also known as the “endurance zone” – which was built with a firmer compound to help prolong the tire life. Michael Lira is a 25-year-old young man with a passion for racing since a very young age. He grew up watching his Dad race and knew right away that racing would be a big part of his future. Lira started racing Quarter Midgets at just 9 years of age, and enjoys racing go-carts on dirt, a more technical sport than racing on asphalt.
Michael Lira’s main goal is to achieve success in racing and he’s accomplished several milestones along his racing journey.

Greg Biffle‘s season has stalled this summer, as his last top-five finish was a victory in June at Michigan International Speedway. Biffle is also the defending winner of the two-mile track’s August event in 2012. The good news for his team is they are returning to Michigan this weekend, hungry for another victory that could be his third consecutive and fourth overall win at the track.
Ninth in NASCAR‘s Sprint Cup Series standings, Biffle needs a boost as he’s barely hanging on to a provisional Chase berth. He’s just four points ahead of 11th-place Kurt Busch, who is looking for success to secure his place in the Chase. Provisional Wild Card holder Kasey Kahne fell out of the top-ten last Sunday by a late-race accident at Watkins Glen is another marker back in 12th-place and already owns a pair of victories this season.
