Credit it to a good car or a lower downforce package, one thing is for sure Tony Stewart was all smiles Sunday afternoon following a season-best seventh place finish in the 48th annual FireKeepers Casino 400.

The Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner and driver qualified a superb third on Friday afternoon and was able to transform the speed into the 200-mile race Sunday afternoon, running as high as third, but eventually finishing seventh. Continue reading

Chase Elliott says ‘Dumb Mistake’ Cost him First Win at Michigan

Continuing to do miraculously things in his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rookie season, Chase Elliott said a ‘dumb mistake’ prevented him from capturing his first career win in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

“I had another fantastic car,” said Elliott. “My guys have been doing a really good job the past few weeks, and we’ve been just trying to give it all we can get to get one of these things. Had another fantastic opportunity today, and I feel like definitely messed that one up for my guys.

“As I said outside, you can’t do dumb stuff and expect to win. That’s just the way life is. That’s certainly the way this sport is, and I did dumb stuff today, so can’t expect to win.”

Logano is Two-for-Two with New Aero Package

In the second race that featured NASCAR’s new lower-downforce package, Joey Logano lowered the boom—again. 

There was one major difference between Joey Logano’s victory in Sunday’s FireKeepers 400 at Michigan International Speedway and his win May 21 in the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte. This one counted in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings and punched Logano’s ticket into the Chase.

But it remained abundantly clear that Team Penske already has a handle on the aerodynamic configuration the sanctioning body is considering for 2017.
