Chase Outlook: The Skinny on Where the Winners Shake Out

A little down time due to the off-weekend provides the perfect setting to take a look ahead at the three drivers who have raced their way into the 2016 NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase with wins – Erik Jones, Daniel Suárez and Elliott Sadler.

If the XFINITY Series Chase were to start today, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones would be seeded in the No. 1 position. Jones is now seventh in the standings but has two wins at Bristol and Dover this season, giving him six bonus points once the Chase begins. JGR’s Sunoco Rookie candidate, Jones, has been quite impressive this season, posting five poles and a series leading eight top-fives. NASCAR Season-To-Date Loop Data also paints a more detailed picture of Jones’ success this season. He ranks second in driver rating (106.7), fourth in average running position (9.477) and third in fastest laps run (204 laps, 9.1%). Continue reading

Capturing his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Victory, AJ Allmendinger held off a hard charging Marcos Ambrose during the closing laps of the Cheez-It™ 355 at The Glen.

The last road course of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season at The Glen gave AJ Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose their best chance to qualify for the Chase. They both knew the stakes were high and gave their best effort to secure a win. They bumped each other door-to-door, racing side-by-side through the esses, and amazingly did it without wrecking. To the thrill of fans they ran a clean, hard race before Allmendinger made his last pass in turn six with just over one lap left to run. From there he went on to the checkered flag and his first series’ career win. Continue reading

The Chase Countdown Challenge Continues for Sprint Cup Drivers

5ToGoWGI-RIR

Five races on five very different tracks give NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers a challenge as they countdown to the Chase.

That’s what faces the Sprint Cup Series and the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. For 11 drivers, it’s all or nothing time. For those 11 drivers with wins – and a likely Chase spot – a victory means three more bonus points tacked on their total to start the Chase.

But, really, these next five races are all about those with no wins. There are some big names out there battling for their playoff hopes – Kasey Kahne, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle. If the Chase started today, only Biffle would make it among the three perennial Chasers.

So while this is not yet panic time, there’s a definite sense of urgency – with a big opportunity awaiting drivers on Sunday afternoon.  Continue reading

Marcos Ambrose was the man to beat during the NASCAR Nationwide Series Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International and there was no denying his Richard Petty Motorsports No. 09 team a visit to Victory Lane on Saturday afternoon. Ambrose had full control of the lead – 47 of 82 laps – en route to winning his fourth consecutive race at this track. This was Ambrose’s first series win of the 2014 season and his fifth series career victory.

Ambrose is now looking for Dale Jr’s broom – after the No. 88 team swept the races at Pocono last weekend – with an eye toward sweeping this weekend with a Sprint Cup Series win in the Cheez-it 355 on Sunday at 1 pm ET on ESPN.  Continue reading
